Westboro Baptist Cult

Okay, there’s this “church” called Westboro Baptist who are full of hate. They have a website: This “church”… actually, let’s call them a cult seeing that their teaching is not founded upon Scripture but on self-righteousness… this cult is going around to funerals for soldiers killed in Iraq protesting that these soldiers should not be honored for they were killed under the judgment of God. And why is God judging America? Well, it’s not because we are a land full of liars, thieves, adulterers, back stabbers, fornicators, heretics, and on and on… nope, it’s because of gays! Now, how ludicrous is this? I mean, I’m not about to say homosexuality is not a sin. Of course it is a sin, but for this sin to become the central focus of why God’s judgment is upon us is ridiculous. Homosexuality is addressed in Scripture, but homosexuals are not the central focus of God’s anger. When God’s anger is upon Israel it’s not simply upon their sexual perversions. In fact, God is even more angry about their lack of care for the poor, the widows, and the orphans. Homosexuality is just an example of man’s total depraved heart, but there are plenty of other sins man commits which deserves damnation. The Bible explicitly says that God HATES divorce. Give me a count of how many more people are divorced versus those who are homosexual? I mean, half of all of my friends come from broken families. I’ve only dealt with one close friend who is now a homosexual.

The Westboro Baptist Cult just makes my blood boil when I hear of their hatred. As Christians we are not called to tolerate evil, but neither are we called to hate. Hear Jesus’ words found in Matthew 5:43-48, “You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that? And if you greet only your brothers, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that? Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.”

I mean, it’s a cliche and overly abused statement, but still has truth to it, “God hates the sin but loves the sinner.” If this weren’t true He wouldn’t have come to earth and taken on flesh to redeem His people. Matthew 9:9-13 teaches: As Jesus went on from there, he saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax collector’s booth. “Follow me,” he told him, and Matthew got up and followed him. While Jesus was having dinner at Matthew’s house, many tax collectors and “sinners” came and ate with him and his disciples. When the Pharisees saw this, they asked his disciples, “Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and ‘sinners’? On hearing this, Jesus said, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. But go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice.’ For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”

The homosexual world is sick. They need a doctor. We as Christians are to point them to the Doctor. This is to be done in a peaceful manner not through the methods of the WBC. The judgment upon sinners is going to come from Christ not from us. Sometimes we have to be firm with the unbeliever and show them the foolishness of their ways, but we are still supposed to respect them as image bearers. We also have to recognize and remember that sinners have suppressed the truth and are unable to know the truth apart from the Holy Spirit. You can’t scream the gay out of someone, you can only pray that the Holy Spirit might change their hearts.

In the Reformed church we have spent way too much time worrying about Federal Vision and New Perspective. We have forgotten that there is a much larger world out there outside of the Reformed ghetto. There are teachings much more destructive than the FV and NP. What are we to do about the Westboro Baptist Cult? How should we as a TRUE church silence these hate mongers ?

  1. I agree! Those people make Christians look like idiots! Its amazing how easy it is for people hate but how difficult it is for people to forgive…I pray that God would take those people out of their slumber!

  2. I actually think they like when the church speaks out against them. They love to be hated. They feel like it validates them. That’s the way so many cults are. They use the fact that everyone hates them and disagrees with them as evidence that they are the only ones who’ve got it together.

I know it’s just wikipedia, but it’s interesting to read this:
